Flax seed has been part of the human diet for over 5000 years. Its origin was ancient Babylon (Egypt). Flax is grown in various areas around the world, The United States, Argentina, Canada, USSR, India and Uruguay. 93% of all American Flax is grown in North Dakota. Flax likes the cool dry plains of the northern midwest United States and Canada. There are different varieties of flax and will either be brown (conventional), yellow or golden. Although there is not much nutritional composition between the brown or golden flax, brown flax is used for more commercial applications such as linseed oil, linoleum, paints, hygiene products and fabric. The Golden Flax or especially the “Omega” variety is a hand-selected, hand sorted variety that is not a GMO or genetically modified type or variety that was developed for human consumption. Flax seed is naturally a Gluten-Free grain, oil, and fiber. Flax can be purchased in the whole-seed form or pre-ground. The human digestive system cannot digest a swallowed whole seed: therefore it is preferred to either buy ground, or milled, flax seed. Many people like to grind their flax fresh daily using a small household grinder.
Flaxseeds supply the body with the essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are not produced by the
body, and are only available through your diet. Not only are flaxseeds richer in Omega 3's than fish
oil, but they pack more fiber ounce for ounce than oat bran. How the body responds to the essential
fatty acids is remarkable. Milled flaxseed is unique among oilseeds because of its exceptionally high
concentration of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and lignans. ALA comprises 57% of the total fatty acids and the lignan
content is 75-800 times that of 66 other plant foods.
Dr Johanna Budwig, highly respected around the world as Germany's premier biochemist, states, "Science
has proven that fats play an important role in the functioning of the entire body. Fats (lipids) are
vital for all growth processing, renewal of cells, brain and nerve functions, even for the
sensory (eyes and ears), and for the body's adjustment to heat, cold, and quick temperature changes.
Our energy resources are based on lipid metabolism. To function efficiently, cells require true
polyunsaturated, live electron-rich lipids, present in abundance in raw flaxseed oil. True polyunsaturated
fats greedily absorb proteins and oxygen and pump them through the system. Studies conducted using
flaxseed oil on numerous disorders have been pouring in from all over the world, showing impressive
results, including anti-tumor activity, increased metabolism, greatly boosted immune system, reduced
cholesterol levels, normalized blood pressure levels and inhibition of cancer cell growth."
